Science in 15 Minutes: "Ecological Risk Analysis for Great Lakes Invasive Species: The 'Asian Carp' is a Red Herring"
Media Gateway, North Quad - 105 South State Street

Sponsored by: Shapiro Science Library
Speaker: Gerald Smith, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus, Departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Geological Sciences, and the Museums of Zoology and Paleontology

Our ecological risk assessment for potential invasion of Silver Carp into the Great Lakes contradicts politicians’ claims. The Great Lakes are too cold, with insufficient food, and with strong potential for top-down control of carp by abundant predators. The risk of Silver Carp entry through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and damage to the Great Lakes fishery is minimal. The 15 minute lecture is followed by time for questions.
