Exhibition Opening: "Back to the Sea: The Evolution of Whales"
Exhibit Museum of Natural History - 1109 Geddes Avenue

Sponsored by: Exhibit Museum of Natural History

Scientists long before Darwin wondered why whales, which are mammals, not fish, live in the sea. Evidence suggests that land-living mammals waded into ancient oceans 50 to 40 million years ago to catch plentiful fish for food. Over time, such animals adapted to an ever-more aquatic lifestyle, until by 40 to 35 million years ago, all ancient whales were fully aquatic. The exhibit includes a spectacular 50-foot cast skeleton of Basilosaurus isis, which swims through the air in the Museum’s Hall of Evolution. Also featured are specimens of Maiacetus, new information panels, and video interviews with paleontologist and curator Philip Gingerich. More information: www.lsa.umich.edu/exhibitmuseum
