The following pledge drive was organized by the Water Semester’s Student Steering Committee.
PLEDGE TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOTTLE
Because.. · Seventy-four percent of Americans drink bottled water, and one in five drinks only bottled water · Worldwide, consumers spent $100 billion on bottled water in 2005 · Bottled water is a waste of scarce natural resources needed to manufacture them · Water is a human right that should not be commodified · Each year more than 4 billion pounds of PET plastic bottles end up in landfills or as roadside litter · Up to 40% of bottled water comes from the same source as tap water, but is sold back to consumers at hundreds of times the cost · Bottled water is less stringently regulated than municipal tap water · Bottled water undermines the public’s faith in their public water sources
I WILL OPT FOR PUBLIC TAP WATER OVER BOTTLED WATER
AND ENCOURAGE SUPPORT OF STRONG PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS
Because of all of these reasons and more, I recognize the benefits of drinking tap water and encourage the U of M community to be conscious consumers. I should recognize the example I have set by signing this pledge and I encourage departments, faculty and individual students to follow my lead in taking a stance on this important human rights issue.
